Marissa Nadler

Critically acclaimed musician and fine artist.

What is Marissa Nadler known for?

Marissa Nadler, born on April 5, 1981 in Washington, D.C., is an American musician and fine artist. Raised in Needham, Massachusetts, she found her passion for music at an early age and went on to become a singer-songwriter, with a discography encompassing a variety of genres from indie folk to black metal, and was even categorized under a distinct genre called "dream folk".

Famous for her mezzo-soprano voice, Marissa's talent has been critically acclaimed, with outlets like Pitchfork and The Boston Globe giving her laudatory reviews. She's been described as having a voice that could lure men to their deaths at sea, an intoxicating soprano drenched in gauzy reverb that hits bell-clear heights, lingers, and tapers off like rings of smoke. Her musical career, active since 2000, has been a flourishing one, with labels such as Sacred Bones Records and Bella Union signing her.

Aside from music, Marissa also pursued a career in the fine arts. She is a proficient painter, with degrees in illustration and art education from the esteemed Rhode Island School of Design. Beyond her outstanding talent in music and fine arts, she also developed skills in bookbinding, wood carving, and encaustic painting — a testament to her artistic versatility.

In her music career, she released her first official album, "Ballads of Living and Dying", in January 2004. This was followed by a series of other successful albums including "The Saga of Mayflower May", "Songs III: Bird on the Water", and her ninth full studio album "The Path of the Clouds" released in October 2021.
