James Steele Gracey, born on August 24, 1927 in Newton, Massachusetts, stands as a notable figure in the history of the United States Coast Guard. Following graduation from Needham High School, based in Needham, Massachusetts, he embarked on a commendable service career that spanned over four decades.

Gracey kick-started his military journey by accepting an appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy. As a cadet, he showcased his leadership potentials, serving as a battalion commander and the captain of the baseball team, in addition to participating in the soccer and rifle teams. Upon graduation in June 1949, he stayed on as a tactical instructor before making his mark in various roles and assignments.

His tenure at the Coast Guard was highlighted by a number of significant assignments. Serving as a branch chief in the supply division at the Coast Guard Headquarters, commanding the buoy tender USCGC Mariposa, and serving as Comptroller of the St. Louis-based Second Coast Guard District were among his early responsibilities. His commendable performance led to a successful transition into flag officer assignments, where he served as commander of several Coast Guard districts, eventually serving as the 17th commandant of the United States Coast Guard from 1982 to 1986.

Gracey's service to the nation was recognized with various awards, such as the Secretary of Treasury Commendation for Achievement Ribbon and a Coast Guard Letter of Commendation. His life of service concluded on April 5, 2020, when he passed away at the age of 92 in Falls Church, Virginia.
