Charlie Baker

72nd and current Governor of Massachusetts

What is Charlie Baker known for?

Born in Elmira, New York, Charles Duane Baker Jr., more commonly known as Charlie Baker, has led an illustrious career in both business and politics. He is an alumnus of Needham High School in Needham, Massachusetts.

Charlie Baker has made a significant impact on the political landscape of Massachusetts, where he served as the 72nd Governor from 2015 to 2023. Prior to that, he held two cabinet positions: Secretary of Health and Human Services and Secretary of Administration and Finance under Governors Bill Weld and Paul Cellucci respectively.

Stepping away from government service for a while, Baker transitioned into the business sector. He served as the CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for a decade, making great strides in the healthcare industry. In 2023, he assumed a new role as the President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Apart from his political and business careers, Baker has also served his local community, spending three years as a selectman in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Despite contemplating a run for the governorship of Massachusetts in 2006, he delayed his plans until 2009, when he stepped down from his role at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care to focus on his gubernatorial campaign.

He ran on a platform of fiscal conservatism and cultural liberalism, and although he lost the 2010 general election to the Democratic incumbent, Deval Patrick, he was successful in his second run during the 2014 Massachusetts gubernatorial election.

Baker's career has been marked by a dedication to public service and a commitment to improving the lives of American citizens. He has demonstrated leadership and fortitude throughout his tenure in various positions, and he continues to influence and shape the future of Massachusetts and the NCAA.
