What is Aly Raisman known for?

Born on May 25, 1994, in Needham, Massachusetts, Alexandra Rose 'Aly' Raisman is an illustrious alumna of Needham High School. Known internationally as an accomplished gymnast, Raisman has had an extraordinary career with noteworthy achievements, having won three Olympic gold medals, two Olympic silver medals, and one Olympic bronze medal.

Raisman etched her name in the annals of gymnastics history at the London 2012 Olympics, where she emerged as the most decorated American gymnast. Alongside her team, fondly referred to as the "Fierce Five", she earned a gold medal in team competitions and individual accolades on the floor.

Raisman achieved even greater heights at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Again, as team captain, but this time of the "Final Five", she helped lead the squad to victory in the team event, earning her and team member Gabby Douglas the distinction of being the only Americans with back-to-back team gold medals. In addition to the team gold, Raisman also clinched silver in both the individual all-around and the floor exercise events.

Aside from her Olympic feats, Raisman's extensive list of accolades includes being a part of the American teams that tasted victory at the World Championships in 2011 and 2015, and a bronze medal on the floor exercise in 2011. Nationally, she won accolades on the floor exercise in 2012 and 2015, and on the balance beam in 2012. Raisman has also been a consistent contender in the all-around, winning five medals.

Raisman, a two-time Olympian, retired from professional gymnastics in January 2020. Her incredible achievements and contributions to the sport led to her being honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 2018. Aly Raisman has since been an inspiration to many young athletes worldwide, and her legacy continues to influence the sport of gymnastics.
