About John D. Tennent Sr., age 85 of Mount Gilead, died Sunday evening, September 14, 2014 at the Woodside Village in Mount Gilead surrounded by his loving familt. He was born on November 3, 1928 to the late Lloyd and Mabel Tennant.
John was a colorful character who grew up playing and working in his uncle's junkyard.That is where he learned to appreciate the true value of a dollar. He acquired a true talent to salvage a variety of unwanted materials, would turn a profit and let nothing go to waste.

John graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the class of 1947, where he earned his title "Big John" playing football. He would carry this nickname through the rest of his life. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He owned and operated his own family business for 25 years called Tennant's Tree Service. Then retired as an independent truck driver.
John married Lure(Robinson) who preceeded him in death. John loved spending time with his family. Working hard and cooking for them was very important to him. He enjoyed making cement lawn ornaments, sports, creating unique recipes, festive music and singing gospel hyms at the church. Hohn was a member of the Gilead Friends Church and the Center E.U.B. Methodist Church.
John is survived by his children: Sondra (Jan) meek of Galion, John (Bonnie) Tennant of Mount Gilead, Thomas (Connie) Tennant of Cardington, Bonnie (Tim Moyer) Tennant of Marana Az, and Connie Tennant of Galion; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Don (Trudy) Tennant of Billings MT and a sister, Prudy Ramsey of Mount gilead. In addition to his parents, John was preceeded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Rizor and a half-sister Helen Saunders.+
