Graduation Year Class of 1972
Date of Passing Nov 14, 2011
About Died on November 14, 2011. He is survived by his loving wife and college sweetheart, Karen Hynes Steffes; his two remarkably caring daughters, Sarah Michael and Hillary Marie Steffes; his brothers and friends, Dan (Reean) Pitts, Robert (Jennifer) and Brian (Wendy) Steffes, and his devoted sister, Felicity Nash. He is also survived by two nephews, Ian Nash and Joseph Steffes; and five nieces, Jenna and Tracy Pitts, Ellen Nash and Chelsea and Kristen Steffes; as well as countless friends, neighbors and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his mother, Felicia Joubert Steffes and his father, Robert August Steffes. Bill was born in England and lived in Israel and Germany during his early years, taking frequent trips to visit his grandparents in Cape Town, South Africa. He spent most of his life in Western Pennsylvania where he worked as "the people's attorney," often taking pro bono cases and helping the least fortunate navigate the legal system. For those who knew him, "Big Bill" Steffes was larger than life: funny, charming, amiable, opinionated, brilliant and widely-read. He was also incredibly sweet and very sensitive. Bill could, and often did, strike up a conversation with anyone-at the grocery store, the courthouse, and on his many forays around town. He had, as his grandmother once said, "the gift of gab." With Bill's passing, there is a silence in the world now that is impossible to fill. Friends will be received at R D COPELAND INC. FUNERAL HOME, 981 Brodhead Rd., in Moon Township, PA on Saturday, November 26, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund in Bill's memory has been established for his daughters. Contributions can be made to: Steffes Children Trust c/o James Kochis, West View Savings Bank, 9001 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
