Graduation Year Class of 1968
Date of Passing Jun 29, 2022
About OREGON - Rosemary “Rose” Birzer passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the age of 71. After a courageous eight-month battle with cancer she fought up until the very end. Like many things she did in her life she was able to decide on her terms how she wanted to fight this difficult battle and the courses of treatment she wanted to take.
Rose was born on July 17, 1950, in Coraopolis, Pa., the daughter of Michael and Olimpia Agostinella. She graduated from Moon High School in 1968. While working in Pennsylvania she met Edward “Ed” Birzer who was serving in the U.S. Army at the time. They were married on Jan. 17, 1970. After Ed was discharged, they moved to Wisconsin where they briefly lived in Eau Claire before moving to Madison.
Rose was employed by the University of Wisconsin, as a Classified employee, and received the Classified Employee Recognition Award in 2003 for 30 years of service. She retired from the University in 2008 after 36+ years of service.
In retirement she enjoyed spending many hours with her grandson, Brayden, and delighted in his many accomplishments. Later she beamed with pride with time spent with young Grayson. Rose loved taking hiking trips, including Acadia National Park, Hawaii, Bryce and Zion National Parks in Utah and Devils Lake State Park. She enjoyed a cruise in the Puget Sound. Rose also enjoyed many vacations shared with longtime best friends, Connie and Tom.
Biking was a favorite pastime, shared with Ed, in and around Oregon and around the state on bike trails. She loved brightening the yard and our area of the world with flowers. Rose spent numerous hours volunteering with the Oregon Area Food Pantry, and also spent time baking treats for the Oregon/BrookIyn group of Habitat for Humanity when they had a local build. She was also a member of Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church.
Rose is survived by her husband, Ed; daughter, Darcey (Scott); two grandsons, Brayden and Grayson; and her brother, Michael (Karen) Agostinella. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Olimpia.
A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2022, and also from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2022. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens at a later date.
Thank you to Dr. Lisa Lepeak and the amazing staff at SSM Health Oncology department. As well as the staff at Turville Bay and Agrace HospiceCare, especially Jan and Julie. You helped in supporting her decision making through her journey and made her final days as comfortable as possible.
She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends, but we know she has been called to a better place, for a better purpose.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your local food pantry, local Habit for Humanity or any charity of your choosing. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com <http://www.gundersonfh.com>.
