Date of Passing Aug 18, 2020
About It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of a great father, grandfather, educator, coach, mentor and veteran, age 91, a Moon Township resident for the past 40+ years, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at UPMC Shadyside hospital. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on July 8, 1929, he was the last survivor of four children to the late Sol and Lillian (Bierman) Kramer. On March 2, 1999, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Elizabeth (McCormick) Kramer. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by siblings George, Bernie, and Rhea. Alex is beloved father of Charles E. (Chris) Kramer of Timaru, New Zealand, and Michele K. (Keith) Kries of Sewickley, cherished grandfather of Spencer and Brooke. Alex's father served for 44 years with the Pittsburgh Fire Department, rising to become fire chief. Growing up in this environment, Alex learned the importance of taking care of others. Alex was a graduate of Taylor Alderdice High School and obtained both his bachelor's and master’s from the University of Pittsburgh in History. He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. Alex taught history for more than 20 years in the Moon Area School District. For 17 years, he was a member of the football staff for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. He served as Executive Assistant to the Head Coach for 5 head coaches (Jackie Sherrill, Foge Fazio, Mike Gottfried, Paul Hackett, and Johnny Majors). In retirement, he continued to inspire others as a professor in adult education with Carnegie Mellon University's Life Long Learning program. Past students and football players always remember Alex as a caring and thoughtful man who made people feel special. The most important thing in Alex’s life was his family, which meant everything to him. He also donated to many charities, especially those that supported animals. Private services and burial were at Sewickley Cemetery with Military Honors. Arrangements were by Copeland's. Because of Alex’s love of animals, his family suggests donations in his name to Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, an animal shelter serving Allegheny County. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and admired this special man. Alex will be remembered as making a difference in so many people's lives.

What an excellent teacher! The war in Viet Nam was raging. Mr. Kramer entered the large classroom and silently walked to the blackboard in his Problems of Democracy class. On the blackboard he wrote a number. The class was silent. "This is the number of soldiers we lost yesterday,," Silence and horror hung in the classroom.. Mr. Kramer did this every day and the war became a reality. Later, we would lose some of our own. Sorrow still lingers. Mr. Kramer was a gift to every student he taught. We were better people for having him.
