Graduation Year Class of 1970
Date of Passing Jan 19, 2020
About Vince, 67, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at his home in Lancaster, SC.
Born August 7, 1952 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the third child of the late John McGarvey and Kathleen Scanlon McGarvey. After graduating Moon Township High School, Vince attended Penn State University and graduated with a degree in Psychology while working for the Citizen’s Ambulance Service. Vince began working in human resources at US Steel and attained a graduate degree in Industrial Relations Resources at West Virginia University. Vince then achieved an MBA at Waynesburg University. Vince taught Human Resources and Management at Penn State University and Winthrop University. Vince worked at General Tire in Charlotte, NC for ten years before working as Director of Human Resources at Thomson Consumer Electronics first in Scranton, PA, then in central Ohio. Vince then became the Global Vice President of Human Resources at Cinram before retiring.
He is survived by his wife Eileen of 43 years, son Michael McGarvey and daughter-in-law Michelle McGarvey, and granddaughters Charlotte and Adaline of Clarks Summit, PA; son Major Christopher McGarvey and daughter-in-law Karen McGarvey of Fort Mill, SC; daughters Molly McGarvey and Madalyn “Joe-Bob” McGarvey of Columbus, OH; five siblings: Dave McGarvey (Dan), Sue McGarvey Titus (Bob); Betsey McGarvey; John McGarvey (Donna); and Gen McGarvey Tanenbaum (Terry); his beloved dog Ginger; as well as many nephews, nieces, and other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kathleen McGarvey.
Vince’s life was devoted to his family. He spoke often about how critical it was to make the time to spend together as the family grew older and began leading independent lives. A dedicated father, Vince raised four children who grew up understanding the value of hard work and the importance of family. More than his own successes, Vince bragged of his children’s hard work and achievements to anyone who would listen. In every home, Vince had a wall of diplomas from each of the alma maters of his family. Vince wanted everyone to feel welcome and included and went out of his way to reach out to anyone who seemed to be alone. He was generous with his time, attention, and money and worked extensively with the Boy Scouts, donated to charity, and was ready with his advice and help for anyone who needed it (he often said that “HR was his superpower” and negotiated the price for each of his children’s cars). Vince was an exceptionally sentimental man who cherished not only his family’s stories and Irish heritage, but also history as a whole and believed in the importance of knowing and understanding the past. An avid reader, Vince read dozens of books every month and went to the movies regularly. He loved dogs and considered himself the “Dog Boss” who hid dog treats in his desk and worried about his “Ginger Poo” whenever he left her for more than a day. Vince had an encyclopedic knowledge of Motown, the Beatles, military aircraft, and American History. He loved the Steelers, cruises, politics, and researching the stock market. He convinced his children that music stopped being produced after 1979 and was proud of his fist bump and dad jokes.
A service to celebrate Vince’s life will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, January 25t, 2020 at 11 AM. Visitation will be at the McEwen Funeral Home in Pineville, NC on Friday, January 24, from 6 to 8 PM.
For those wishing to remember Vince, we invite donations in his name to the American Heart Association and the Humane Society.
