In August of 1965 my family moved from Massachusetts to Metuchen. September would be the start of my senior year and I knew nobody. It turned out that Sandi lived two doors down and soon came over and introduced herself. She was friendly and had an outsized smile. Sandi offered to show me Metuchen and meet some classmates. We walked to town and we ended up having ice cream sodas at Wernick’s. A few of her friends arrived, two of them cheerleaders and we had a great time getting acquainted until the staff made it clear we should buy something else or leave. We walked over to the railroad station and watched a few trains go by before heading home. In a short while school started and I already knew a few kids, but Sandi best of all. So, it was Sandi who took it on herself to introduce this bewildered stranger to Metuchen and for that I’ll always be grateful.
