About Cedric Z. “Rick” Gurski, age 71, passed away at home in Medina on Thursday, May 13, 2021. He was born in Gary, Indiana, on April 5, 1950, to Joseph Z. Gurski and Helen F. (Stropki) Gurski, both of whom preceded him in death.

Surviving Rick, and cherishing his memory, are his wife of 23 years, Sherolyn (Wirtz) Gurski; his children, Rick Gurski and Amanda (Eric) Darrow; his stepchildren, John (Stephanie) LeClair and Lori LeClair; his grandchildren, Alison LeClair and Jeremy LeClair; his sister, Sandra (Art) Singer; and niece, Kate (Luke) Vista.

Rick proudly served our country in the Coast Guard Reserves, for which we are a grateful nation. He worked as a railroad conductor with CSX Railroad for over 41 years. He was a regular member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Medina, as well as having served as a Eucharist minister at St. Claire Catholic Church in Mayfield Heights. Rick was also a member of Moose, Eagles, VFW, Knights of Columbus in Ohio, as well as the American Legion in Florida. He worked for the Cleveland Hopkins Airport Shuttle Service part-time and very much enjoyed driving for them. Rick also maintained his private pilot’s license and had a passion for flying. Boating and fishing were also among Rick’s favorite hobbies and he enjoyed doing both often. Additionally, reflecting on his fond memories participating in the Mayfield High School marching band (class of 1968), Rick established the Gurski Herman Treu Band Scholarship fund. Described by his family as a compassionate man, Rick would “do anything for anybody” and went out of his way to help anyone who needed assistance of any kind. Above all, Rick was a loving and attentive husband, father, and brother and will be missed greatly by his family.

Rick’s family is planning a private memorial service for him that will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Rick’s name to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (606 E. Washington St, Medina, OH 44256) or to the Gurski Herman Treu Band Scholarship fund via Mayfield Alumni Association (Mayfield High School, 6116 Wilson Mills Rd., Mayfield Village, OH 44143). Any memories of Rick and condolences can be posted at www.waitefuneralhome.com.
