About Obituary

Daniel Fite

Daniel Fite (class of June 1960) died on June 2, 2011. He was 69. Born in Philadelphia, Dan lived for many years in Willingboro, NJ.
At Mastbaum, Dan was enrolled in the Commercial Arts program, taught by Nathan Mirrell.
Following graduation from Mastbaum, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was first posted in the Aleutian Islands and then to Hawaii. He was later transferred to Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Vietnam where he served as a forward weather observer during the height of the Vietnam war.
Honorably discharged from the USAF, Dan returned to Philadelphia to begin a career in graphic arts, taking a position with a firm in center city. It was there that Dan met and married Dorothy Proctor, the love of his life. Their life together ended tragically when Dorothy died in an automobile crash. Dan suffered severe injuries leaving him permanently disabled and he retired from the graphics industry.
Those who knew Dan remember him as an authentic non-conformist. Dan truly was one of a kind. His creative and theatrical side really emerged every Halloween, Dan’s favorite holiday. Long before anyone else was doing it, he turned his house into a nightmarish showcase, complete with semi-animated creatures, decorations and even sound effects, all of which he designed and built. The highlight for Dan was creating himself into a Dracula-like character. He loved nothing better than scaring the hell out of neighborhood trick-or-treaters.
Dan did something even more ambitious at his home in Willingboro. He loved his time in Hawaii so much that he attempted to create a tropical environment in his backyard using the pool as a centerpiece. It was landscaped with faux palm trees and grass huts and a grotto complete with waterfall. He even held full-blown luaus.
While Dan had no children and left no survivors, those of us who knew him will keep him always our memory.
