Gifts of Onile “A Tombigbee Tale” By Eddie J. Carr

At the age of twenty-two Josh Wilkes finds himself and the family ranch in a struggle with a greedy plantation owner and band of outlaws. His father, not back from the war, has left him in charge of protecting his mother and the colored family that lives there in a time just after the Civil War. A time when feelings are of hate for coloreds and someone to trust is hard to find. He finds a horse that surprises him and a girl that his feelings grow for but the one problem is her uncle, the plantation owner and his secret for wanting the Wilkes Ranch. With his wit and roughness, Josh has to take a stand with what friends he has and a horse called Onile, or lose everything.

Eddie J. Carr, after publishing his first book, “Truth Is”, Life Love and Humor, has now wrote a fictional tale using the southern part of lower Alabama as his setting. Like his book of poetry, he has entered history into this fictional tale that he calls his southern/western. Even thought the lines do not rhyme the story told is in the same nature as his poems, full of excitement, history and imagination.
Eddie has been urged by his family and friends to continue writing and plans on beginning a lengthy story using one of his poems from Truth Is. With everything in the world as it is today, it doesn’t hurt to look back at how things were. Using the struggles that people faced in a time when a person had to learn to work for them selves and use any means they could to survive. Eddie’s love of the outdoors, history and horses has brought this tale to life. His hopes are that person’s reading it will enjoy the story and uncover the “Gifts of Onile.”
