William H. Upham, a renowned alumnus of Marshfield High School in Marshfield, Wisconsin, was a prominent figure in American politics, recognized for his substantial contributions as a businessman, politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. Born on May 3, 1841, in Westminster, Massachusetts, Upham moved to Wisconsin in the early 1850s.

His political career was quite highlighted, serving as the 18th Governor of Wisconsin from January 1895 to January 1897. Before becoming governor, Upham was a member of the Marshfield, Wisconsin City Council, serving from April 1883 to April 1886. He also served as the Mayor of Marshfield, Wisconsin twice - from April 1886 to April 1888, and from April 1891 to April 1892.

Apart from his political career, Upham is remembered for his military service during the American Civil War. Serving as a Corporal in United States Volunteers and as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army, Upham was a part of several crucial battles including the Manassas campaign and the First Battle of Bull Run. His military career spanned from 1861 to 1869.

Upham's contributions were greatly appreciated, and he is the namesake of Upham, Wisconsin, in Langlade County.

After a prominent life of service, Upham passed away on July 2, 1924, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, where his resting place, Hillside Cemetery, now stands.
