What is Gary Varsho known for?

Born on June 20, 1961, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, Gary Andrew Varsho is a well-known figure in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is an alumni of Marshfield High School and later went on to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, earning a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1989.

Varsho's professional career in baseball began with the Chicago Cubs, who selected him as a second baseman in the fifth round of the 1982 June draft. He made his MLB debut for the Cubs on July 6, 1988, and played for the team until 1990. Afterward, he moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates (1991-1992), Cincinnati Reds (1993), went back to the Pirates (1994), and finally to the Philadelphia Phillies (1995). Throughout his eight seasons in the major leagues, Varsho achieved a batting average of .244, hit 10 home runs, and marked 84 runs batted in.

Not just a player, Varsho also distinguished himself as a manager and coach. After retiring as a player, he served as the bench coach for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2002 to 2006, and briefly stepped in as an interim manager for the team's final two games of the 2004 season. Later, he offered his expertise to the Pittsburgh Pirates (2008-2010). In 2012, he began his tenure as a professional scout for the Los Angeles Angels, and since 2016, he has served in the same capacity for his former team, the Pirates.

Off the field, Varsho and his wife Kay raised three children, all of whom were born during his baseball career. Their son Daulton, born in 1996, has also embarked on a professional baseball career as a catcher and outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays.
