What is Ethan Finlay known for?

Ethan Finlay, born on August 6, 1990, in Duluth, Minnesota, is an admired American professional soccer player known for his position as a winger. The Marshfield High School alumnus kick-started his soccer passion at a young age, playing high school soccer in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and youth soccer for FC Milwaukee.

During his college years, Finlay played for the Creighton Bluejays from 2008 to 2011, setting an impressive record that placed him among Creighton's top five scorers at the time. His skills on the pitch didn't go unnoticed; he was a finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy in 2012, which is awarded to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the United States. He also received several other recognitions such as NSCAA All-American First Team 2011, NSCA Academic National Player of the Year 2011, College Soccer News All-American First Team 2011, and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

Finlay's professional career began with the Columbus Crew, who selected him in the first round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. His first goal in the Major League Soccer came in a game against the Portland Timbers in May 2014. His standout performance came in the 2015 season, where he scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists.

After his stint with the Crew, he played for Minnesota United from 2017 to 2021, before moving to Austin FC in 2022. He continued his professional contributions there and became the sixth active player with 50 goals and 50 assists in his career.

On the international front, Finlay made his debut for the United States men's national soccer team in 2016 in a friendly against Iceland. In his second game, he recorded an assist on the USA's game-winning goal against Canada. Being of dual nationality, Finlay had the chance to represent either the United States or Canada in international fixtures but ultimately chose to wear the jersey of his country of birth - United States.

His international career features 3 matches for the United States, although he did not score any goals.
