"AMHERST - John William 'Bill' Hall, Jr., 77 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012, at New Life Hospice Residence Center of Lorain following an extended illness.

Bill was born June 29, 1934, in Kent, Ohio, and came to Amherst as a youth graduating in 1952 from Amherst High School. Amherst has been his home since that time.

At the age of 18, Bill worked as a certified auto mechanic for the Sohio Standard Oil Company and at the age of 22 was given the opportunity to own and operate his own station, the Lorain Standard Oil gas station.

After 30 years in the gas station business, he chose to enter the sales side of the automobile industry and sold cars for Sliman's Auto Sales for 15 years. As a member of Old Stone United Methodist Church, Bill was active in many aspects of the church and its leadership including youth leader, chairman of the trustee board and administrative board, usher, and counting the offering. He was a member of the Stonington Masonic Lodge and also worked with the youth in the Order of the DeMolay. Around town, Bill enjoyed the Jaycees, Cub Scout leader, SCOA, and Pinochle Card Club. In his spare time, he loved hunting and fishing, leather tooling, golf, sudoku puzzles, bird watching and other wildlife. He loved to travel around the United States and take day trips. The joy of his life was attending his grandchildrens' school and summer events.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of fifty-seven years Lucile (nee: Zuspan); his sons John W. III (Laura), of Vermilion, David C., of Yorktown, VA, and Douglas R., also of Vermilion; his daughter Deborah L. (Kris) Diaz, of Amherst; his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kimberly Martin, Jessica, Jacob, and Nicholas Diaz, Sarah and Hannah Hall, Amarah and Brian Martin II.

Bill was preceded in death by his siblings Kelly Hall, Kay Shutler, June Deffenbaugh, Eileen McCandless, and Marilyn Jolley; and his parents John and Lillian (nee: Curtis) Hall.

Friends may call Tuesday, May 8, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, where Masonic services will take place at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Old Stone United Methodist Church 553 South Main St., Amherst, Ohio. The Rev. Daniel Reinke will officiate. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery Amherst, Ohio.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation for the compassionate care and attention given by the medical staff and personnel of Mercy Hospital, Kingston of Vermilion, and New Life Hospice Center.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Amherst Public Library 221 Spring St., Amherst OH 44001 or Old Stone United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 553 South Main St., Amherst OH 44001."
