Graduation Year Class of 1945
Date of Passing Sep 08, 2009
About JeanWhitaker, 82, Daytona Beach passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2009. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009 at the Central Baptist Church 142 Fairview Ave., Daytona Beach with interment to immediately follow at Daytona Memorial Park. Jean was born September 2, 1927 in Orlando, Florida and moved to Daytona beach in December 1940. She graduated from Mainland High School in 1945. In fact, her husband, James Whitaker and all three of her sons graduated from Mainland. During World War II, she was the secretary at the Army Personnel Branch of the Welsh Convalescent Hospital and a volunteer for the U.S. Army Aircraft Warning Service. She was also a bookkeeper, bank teller and box office and reservations clerk for the Daytona Beach Symphony Society. She has been a member of the Central Baptist Church for over 40 years. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, great friend and grandmother. She cared for her children, her parents, her in-laws and all those who resided at 506 Tarragona Way in Daytona Beach. She enjoyed golfing, fishing, roller skating, reading, walking, sweets, jigsaw puzzles and happy hours at her son's home. What an angel she was. Even though she lost her ability to speak and eat, she never wavered in her faith, her sense of humor and being in charge. We will miss her so very much. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim and daughter, Janice Louise and survived by three sons, twins, James, Daytona Beach and Robert, Lake Mary, Mark and daughter-in law, Joyce; grandson, Taylor James; and granddaughter, Dakota Jean, DeLand. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Jean's memory to Halifax Humane Society, 2364 LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32124 or to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Arrangements under the careful direction of Baggett-Summers Funeral Home, 736 S. Beach Street, Daytona Beach, FL 32114, (386)236-1100.
