About NN – Bernard “Butch” Hugh McIlwain, 58, of Lynn, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 3rd. He was the devoted husband and best friend of Susan (McDermott) McIlwain with whom he shared 28 years of marriage. Born in Lynn, Butch was the beloved son of Elaine (Sweeney) Carpenter of Ft. Myers, FL and the late Edward Carpenter and the son-in-law of the late Donna and William Morrison. He was the loving father of Riley McIlwain and his wife, Cindy of Everett; the cherished grandfather of Jacob, Jason and Ryan; the dear brother of Denise Sullivan and her husband, Leo of Ft. Myers, Marilyn O’Neil and her husband, John, and Edward Carpenter, all of Lynn; the brother-in-law of Ellen Serino and her husband, Bobby of Nahant and William McDermott of Arizona; and the uncle of John, Sara, Shayna, Jake, Nicole, Robert, Ryan and Callie. Butch graduated from Lynn English High School with the Class of ’78 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1988. Butch worked as a machinist at GE in Lynn for the past 17 years. Butch mastered Judo for over 40 years and held a 3rd degree Black Belt. He enjoyed practicing with his son, Riley, at Jimmy Pedro’s Judo Center in Wakefield. He enjoyed traveling and especially to Ft. Myers, FL and to the family lake home in Weirs Beach, Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, where he enjoyed boating, jet skis, and moonlight lake cruises with AJ and Johanne. An accomplished handyman, he could fix anything, talk forever with a great sense of quick humor, and enjoyed reading and Jeopardy. He was also an avid sports fan of Boston teams. He especially enjoyed going to Red Sox games with Susan. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Susan, son and daughter-in-law Riley and Cindy, his grandchildren and extended family and many friends. Butch’s funeral will be held on Monday from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn at 10:00 a.m. followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius V Church, Lynn. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 9th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
