About ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Paul Rogers, 66, a longtime Capitol Hill aide who grew up in Longview, died March 21,2013, at his home in Alexandria, Va, after a long battle with cancer. A 1964 graduate of LHS, he was born in Columbia MO. He found his calling in public service at the University of Houston, where he served as president of the student body in the early 1970s. There, he teamed up with the late Mickey Leland, who was an antipoverty activist running for state representative at the time. Later, when Mr. Leland was elected to the Texas legislature, Paul became his top aide. In the late 1970s, Leland joined the administration of former President Jimmy Carter, Washington. He worked part of that time in the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization office & part of the time in the White House personnel office. From 1983 to 1997, Paul was chief of staff to former U.S. Rep. Ronald D. Coleman, El Paso. He served in the same role, from 1997- 2005, for former U. S. Rep. Max Sandlin, from the 1st Congressional district in East Texas. He leaves behind his wife of 29 years, Debra Viadero-Rogers, Alexandria; daughters, Emily & Meredith Rogers, Alexandria; mother, June R. Green, Lgv; sister, Gloria Willeford, Lgv; brother, E Clay Rogers, Austin. A memorial celebration was held later.
