Important News and Change of Date to the BHLHS “Mostly 50th Class Reunion, Hosted by the Class of 1970.

The class reunion committee, after much thought and deliberation, has decided to move the class reunion’s weekend of activities to next year - the weekend of August 7th 2021. All current ticket sales and RSVPs are secure and will be honored. We sincerely hope and are counting on the fact that you will still want to join us for a very fun, memorable, and yet safe reunion weekend. Of course, should you need to change your RSVP status or require a refund, you can always contact us through the website; https://bhlahser1970.myevent.com/.

Here are some of the facts that went into making this decision:

The Covid-19 Virus!

We’ve been closely following the Governor’s briefings, reports from the CDC, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and local county health departments. We are also very fortunate to have a Doctor of Internal medicine with a specialty in Geriatrics as one of our committee members: Dr. Lisa (Marshak) Speck, MD. She has helped us in understanding the myriad of medical information and how it applies to this event, so that we could make the right decision.

Even though it appears that Michigan may be starting to flatten the curve on the number of new cases and deaths, there still seems to be credible fear by some officials that we may be hit with a second wave of this virus. This could begin as early as mid-August into late fall. (Our reunion was originally scheduled for August 14th, 15th & 16th)
Our specific demographic, (people 65 and older) appear to be the most vulnerable demographic to this virus. It makes no sense to create an event that would put the overwhelming majority of those attending at risk.
We have received numerous emails and comments from classmates who would like to attend, but for safety reasons, feel that this August may be too soon. There have also been a number of comments from classmates who are concerned it may not be safe to travel by then.
Unfortunately, ticket sales and RSVPs have reflected the above sentiment. They’ve gone from being solid and steady, to a slow crawl in the past month.
There is the possibility that the Governor could extend or order another “Shelter-in-Place” if a second wave of the virus were discovered.
Also, if social distancing remains as the mandated norm, it would be impossible to hold our reunion in any of the venues we have planned for that weekend. There’s just not enough physical room.
The Iroquois Club is offering us this one opportunity to move the date without potentially losing our deposit (which is substantial).
Since there is no clear-cut idea as to when we’ll be able to get back to normal activities in the immediate future, we’ve decided to push into next year (2021) as our best chance for success.
Please know that this decision did not come easily. Plenty of time, thought, discussion and consideration went into what is basically a judgement call. The committee hope’s that we’ve gotten it right. The most important consideration of course is everyone’s safety and well-being!

Sincerely,
BHLHS Reunion Committee, Class of 1970
