Obituary
J. Kirk VanDagens died December 10, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was 64 years old. Kirk was born March 11, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Anne and John VanDagens. He began his childhood in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. His family moved to Bloomfield Hills when Kirk was in fourth grade.

In 1974, Kirk graduated from Lahser High School. He continued his education at Western Michigan University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He then earned his Masters of Business Administration from Bowling Green State University. Following his education, Kirk began his career in finance, working for IDS in St. Louis, MO. He returned to Michigan in 1985, after taking a position with Shearson Lehman Brothers. A couple of years later, he started a new job with First of America Bank. First of America was subsequently acquired by PNC. There, Kirk enjoyed a successful career for 33 years, most recently as a Senior Vice President.

Kirk had many different interests and passions. The most important foundation of his life was his family, who he took great pride in watching over and protecting. He lived with a sincere devotion to his wife, daughter, siblings, nieces and nephews, which will always be remembered. He and Mary were blessed to spend time with many close and cherished friends with whom they formed countless memories.

Kirk loved to golf and sail, especially up north and at the family cottage on Mullett Lake. He possessed a creative and infectious sense of humor that was enjoyed by all. Kirk was an avid music lover; he enjoyed jazz, playing guitars and collecting them. He also loved collecting and wearing unique watches. Kirk found a great amount of pleasure in driving and owning several sports cars. He was very well-read and could be considered a history buff. Reading about something historical or watching a history or music documentary was one of his favorite pastimes. It was important for Kirk to give back to his community. He was involved in different local organizations over the years and was on the board of directors for Lighthouse of Oakland County.

Kirk was the loving husband of Mary for 36 years, dear father of Sarah, beloved brother of Doug (Bridget) and Kathy (Dan Van Overbeke). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. A Celebration of Life will be planned for 2021.

If loved ones wish to make memorial donations, Kirk was an ardent supporter of the Lighthouse of Oakland County,46156 Woodward Avenue, Pontiac, MI 48342, website and the Mullett Lake Area Preservation Society, 5195 Manchester St, Topinabee, MI 49791, website
