My class is actually the Class of 1942. I was born in King City in 1924. My parents were Effie Athelma Edrington Lamb and Charles Allen Lamb. We lived in San Ardo on our cattle ranch. I attended grammar school in San Ardo for eight years, and continued my education at King City High School. Dorothy Whitman, Donald Brown, the Frudden kids, the Brinan kids (Mrs. Brinan was an elementary teacher in San Ardo), Lois and Irene Glau (my first cousins), my brother Kenneth Lamb, and the Edrington kids (more of my first cousins), are just some of my classmates during that period of time.
I rode in the King City Rodeo parade on my horse Blaise, and I also competed and won prizes in the Salinas Rodeo. One time I rode my horse Blaise all the way from San Ardo into Salinas for the Parade and Rodeo, with my Mother and younger siblings following behind me in the cattle truck. My Mother used to rent out horses to other people who wanted to ride in the Parade. My Father, Charles Lamb, used to own the San Ardo Hotel and sold it to the Cioponni Family. What stands out most in my mind about King City High School was our beautiful auditorium, where all kinds of meetings were held. I took English classes, I remember, and rode the bus everyday back and forth from San Ardo.
My Father's family was very colorful - my uncle Graham lived on our ranch part of the time - early in his career he was a superintendent with Miller and Lux Cattle Company, (he is named in the book, "Cattle King"), then he moved to Nevada and eventually became the Sheriff of Humboldt County, with his headquarters in Winnemucca. Tragically, he was killed while on duty trying to arrest a gunman out on a ranch. His son, my cousin, was his Deputy accompanying him for this attempted arrest, and he shot and killed the outlaw after he shot my Uncle. These were just some of the visitors out at our ranch while I was attending King City High School.
