
On December 7, 1995, Smith was appointed as Chief of Police of the City of Kaufman. A life-long Kaufmanite, became the first black Chief of Police in the City's storied history. He led KPD for 12 years. After spending a total of 20 years in Law enforcement, Smith retired from KPD in 2007. He is currently involved in full time ministry. In April of 2007, Smith was recieved an award from the State of Texas for his Community Service efforts. In August of 1998, the Presiding Bishop of the NorthEast Texas Conference of AME churches honored Smith as the Outstanding Community Man of the Year. In September of 1997, Smith was elected president of the Greater North Texas chapter of the National Ogranization of Black Law enforcement officials. Both Dallas Televison and Newspaper recognized Smith with aired and printed storylines during his time as Police Chief. Along with his minister duties, Smith is also involved in substitute teaching at KISD.
