What is Mike Akiu known for?

Karl Michael Akiu, more commonly known as Mike Akiu, was born on 12 February 1962 in Kailua, Honolulu County, Hawaii. He gained significant recognition as an American football player, further contributing to the sports world later as a coach.

Displaying his sporting prowess from an early age, Akiu played high school football for Kalaheo High School Mustangs from 1976 to 1979, where he gained all-state honors. During his high school years, he excelled in multiple positions such as defensive back, running back, and wide receiver. He also showcased his versatility as a centerfielder on the baseball team and as a state champion in track and field.

His college years were spent initially at Washington State University on a track scholarship. However, he later transferred to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to play college football for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors from 1982 to 1984.

Following his college years, Akiu made a successful transition into professional football. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the 7th round of the 1985 NFL Draft. His career saw him playing for the Houston Oilers twice, and also briefly being a practicing member of the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills. After retiring as a player, Akiu transitioned into coaching. He made a remarkable impact as the coach of the Windward Tigers Pop Warner Midgets with a 95-5 record. He also served as the head coach for his alma mater, the Kalaheo Mustangs, from 2000 to 2002.

Outside his sporting career, Mike Akiu has also made his mark. Notably, he was employed as a stevedore. His legacy continues with his son, Mike Akiu Jr, who also played for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.
