Zackary Drucker

Television producer and Emmy Award nominee for the docu-series This Is Me

What is Zackary Drucker known for?

Notable Jamesville-DeWitt High School alumni, Zackary Drucker, has led a remarkable career in the world of art and television. Born in Syracuse, New York in 1983, she is a well-known American trans woman multimedia artist, cultural producer, LGBT activist, actress, and television producer.

Drucker earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and her Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts. Her art, which spans performance, photography, and film, primarily explores and critiques themes of gender and sexuality.

Outside of her artwork, Drucker is an Emmy-nominated producer for the docu-series 'This Is Me' and a consultant for the popular TV series, 'Transparent'. She considers the discovery, telling, and preservation of trans history as both her artistic opportunity and political responsibility.

Her work has been exhibited in countless prestigious galleries, museums, and film festivals around the world. This includes the 2014 Whitney Biennial, MoMA PS1, Hammer Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern art.

Upon moving to Los Angeles after graduating from CalArts, Drucker collaborated with various artists and had her work featured in numerous exhibitions. One of her most notable projects includes the series titled "Home is Where the Heart is, Distance is Where You Hang Your Heart," which was a collaborative effort with photographer Amos Mac. This series was based in Drucker's hometown of Syracuse and was also published in "TransLady Fanzine".

Known for her gender nonconformity, Drucker chose to keep her traditionally masculine first name, Zackary, after transitioning. This, she explained, was a decision made to help bring about change in societal expectations about gender.

Drucker's personal life also became a part of her artwork when she and her partner at the time, Rhys Ernst, captured their day-to-day life in a series of photographs that were showcased at the Whitney Museum of American Art. These photographs served as an important public record for transgender life, showing that transgender people can lead ordinary lives full of love.
