About	Our friend, "SPUDS" ended a long battle with lukemia Sunday and went home to his Creator at the heartfelt loss to those who knew and loved him. Carl Junior Smith was born July 11, 1944 to Carl J. and Paulina Marie Smith and graduated from Hillcrest High School in Springfield in 1962. He continued his education and graduated from Southwest Missouri State College here in 1966. Next was service to his country and enlistment into the United States Army, where he finished his tour as First Lieutenant in the Intelligence branch in 1969. After returning to Springfield he joined Reinholt and Gardner as a Stock Broker and had a long and successful career in this field principally with Birchtree Financial Services. He was a life member of the Elks Club #409 in Springfield. Always in good humor, a passion for travel, quality food and drink, and gaming punctuated his life. He had a deep and biding respect for all animals and was generous to extreme. He never berated others and to the end maintained a positive and optimistic attitude to life itself. He will be sorely missed by those he always seemed to make feel better about themselves, just by being around him. Truly a gift. Arrangements are by Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, with only a small graveside service at the chapel at The James River V.A. Cemetery at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 4, 2011.
