About | Subjects taught: Citizenship, World History, Archeology Club Sponsor Thelma Kathryn Ryba was the widow of Mike Ryba who was employed by both the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox baseball organizations over a 45-year period. Thelma was born in Monett and moved to Springfield at age 2. She graduated from Southwest Missouri Teachers College and taught there one year before her marriage in 1935. In Springfield, she served on the first boards of the League of Women Voters and the L.I.F.T. program. She was also on the boards of the Springfield Ballet and the Southwest Missouri Museum Association. She was involved in the establishment of the Springfield Widowed Persons Service. After 16 years of teaching at Hillcrest High School, she retired and traveled extensively to foreign countries. She gave numerous travelogues and the King Tut Exhibit presentation to various groups and organizations. She was a member of the State and national Retired Teachers Association, the League of Women Voters, the Greene County Historical Society, and the Home Decoration Group of SSMA. She is survived by her children, Rose Carolyn Brookman of Tulsa, Mike Ryba and Patricia Hoover of Kansas City; and six grandchildren. In grateful acknowledgement of its support, the family requestions donations to Hospice of Southwest Missouri. Family graveside services will be Thursday in Resurrection Cemetery with the Rev. Nelson Parnell officiating. Burial will be under direction of Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.
