Graduation Year Class of 1971
Date of Passing Oct 26, 2013
About HARRELL, LINDA KRISTINE (SCHOLER) Linda died on October 26, 2013 at her home in Marysville, WA, after a courageous fight against cancer. She was born in Dalles, OR on April 10, 1953. She moved with her family to Champaign, IL in 1955 when her father, E. A. "Swede' Scholer enrolled in graduate school at the University of Illinois. In 1958 the family crossed the Atlantic ocean on the Bergensfjord to Norway where her father did research for his doctoral dissertation. On their return to the states in 1959, the family settled in Iowa City, IA, where they lived for nine years. In 1968 they moved to Albuquerque and Linda enrolled at Highland High School and graduated in 1971. She started at Texas Tech in Lubbock as a freshman but after one year transferred to Texas A&M at College Station. As a sophomore she became an academic tutor for the Athletic Dept. because of her teaching skills. During her college years she worked as a counselor at Camp Thunderbird in Minnesota where she helped plan a camping trio to the Southwest for a group of the campers during one of the summers. After completing her degree in Community Recreation in 1975 she became a proud "Aggie" for life. She was the first woman to be named Supt. of a State Park in NM. Later she worked for PNM and then went to NMSU for graduate studies. There she completed the newly established curriculum in Water Treatment Management and then a Master's degree in Public Administration. In recent years she had worked for HUD Section 8 Housing in Everett, WA. She continued to work part time after her cancer diagnosis until she entered the hospital in mid September for brain surgery when she became critically ill. She is survived by her husband Richard; daughters Katie and Becca of Bothell and Marysville, WA; step-daughter Niki Bridge and her family of Navajo Lake, NM; mother Aleatha Scholer of Albuquerque; sister Melanie Scholer of Corrales; brother Duane; and other extended family. The birth of identical twin boys to her nephew Travis Scholer and his wife Sara on Sept. 11th brought her special joy as a great-aunt. A celebration of her life will be held at the Marysville Washington Methodist Church on November 9th. While in the hospital in September she learned about the current Highland High School band and what they have accomplished under the leadership of Josephine Gonzales. As she played the clarinet when she was at Highland, she asked that donations be made to this group in her memory by any New Mexicans who choose to do so.
