| About Me | After leaving HP I got my degree from Northwestern University, where I majored in communication. After graduation I came to Washington, DC, where the Red Cross hired me to shoot and edit films. I worked in the film/TV/audio crafts for several years, moved on to writing, producing and directing, and finally corporate communication management, where I managed a private satellite TV network in the 90s. With a background in documentary and short films, in the 1980s I became active as a volunteer with CINE, the nation's foremost awards organization for that kind of material, eventually becoming national president for a term. Over the years with CINE I was invited to judge many film festivals overseas, which proved to be very rewarding experiences. During my career I shot, directed, produced and wrote films all over the US and Europe too, retired in 2000 with more than 30 national and international production awards on the wall. In 1968 I met my wife Terry, who at the time was on the staff of VP Hubert Humphrey. We were married in the tumultuous year of 1969, and she went on to a career in international trade development, both for the government and in the private sector. For a quarter century she organized and led trade missions and seminars all over the globe, promoting US exports. We have two sons, one an airline captain, and the other an internet advertising man. We've lived in the same house in the DC suburb of Arlington, VA since 1972. Despite the fact that we've both been trotting around the world for business and pleasure for a half century, the travel bug has never left us. We jump on planes, trains, ships, and into cars as often as we can. I've been to 47 states and about 70 countries, many of them multiple times. We also like to garden, we love music and theatre, and we treasure our family and our many friends. Of course, given my background, we're film fans as well, and get a lot of joy out of our home theater, and take a lot of pride in it too. I installed the 106" screen and full surround sound system myself and we really enjoy going to the movies there. And, my old days as a cinematographer never left me--I still enjoy photography immensely, especially the opportunities that working in digital bring. I'm also a lifelong Sherlockian and a member of three Sherlock Holmes scion societies: The Sherlock Holmes Society of London, the Reichenbach Irregulars of Switzerland and The Red Circle of Washington DC, where I serve as webmaster. We visit London fairly regularly to attend Sherlockian meetings there, one of which included dinner at the House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster. In retirement, I'm still active with CINE, serving as a "Distinguished Juror," and writing and producing our annual gala awards show here in Washington. I especially enjoy our student categories, watching the young folks find their voices. Paying it forward is important, and it means a lot to me. Lately, the genealogy bug has bitten me, and I've undertaken a family roots search. In May 2011 Terry and I visited Cornwall in England to try to trace down one limb of my mother's side of the family tree. The search was successful, and in the spring of 2012 we returned to England, this time to the Channel Island of Guernsey, to continue the family history research. Again, the efforts were successful as was the visit to this charming place. Toward the end of 2012 I completed a 30,000 word book on my mother's family, tracing us back to my 26th great grandfather, William the Conqueror of England. The book includes a CD containing about 300 supporting documents. Naturally, the 30 living descendants of my mother's family were pleased with their Christmas present. I still tell people that my love for writing and communication began in Mike Keisman's humanities class at HP, where he threw a bunch of us unsuspecting freshmen into the deep end of the English pool, watched us thrash around, and finally pulled us out with a smile and told us we were great. I had no idea then how much that soaking would mean to me. Latest travels: 2013 to four countries in South America plus a quick cruise to Bermuda in August and visits to San Antonio and New Mexico in October. Then in February and March 2014 to San Francisco, Hawaii, Los Angeles and Charleston, SC. In September 2014 to Davos, high in the Swiss Alps, for another Sherlock Holmes conference, and Antwerp and Brussels Belgium to visit friends, see the sights and do some research into Terry's family history. Plus, at the end of the year a quick cruise to the Caribbean. In 2015 we spent three weeks in India which proved to be an eye-opener. And I made a quick 3-day solo trip to London to take in the spectacular Sherlock Holmes exhibition at the Museum of London and to visit with friends. Then it was back to England in May for a wedding of dear friends in Winchester, returning home on the Queen Mary 2, an absolutely gorgeous ship. In February and March 2016 seven airplanes and a Pacific crossing on Queen Victoria took us from California to Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia for a wonderful six week, 22,000 mile adventure.
