Ellen Ochoa

Class of 1975

Ellen Ochoa graduated from San Diego State in 1980 and received masters and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University (1981, 1985). She investigated optical systems for performing information processing and is co-inventor on three patents for optical devices: a system that inspects objects; a system that identifies, and can "recognize," objects; and a system that minimizes distortion in the images taken of an object..

In 1991, she became a NASA astronaut. She has flown on four missions. logging over 978 hours in space. Ochoa flew as a Mission Specialist on a Discovery Space Shuttle Mission (STS-56, 1993), becoming the first female Hispanic in space. The next year, she was Payload Commander on a follow-up Shuttle Mission (STS-66, 1994). Ochoa was a mission specialist and flight engineer on STS-96 (1999) and STS-110 (2002).She is now Deputy Director at NASA's Johnson Space Center.
