Albert "Cowboy" Jones

Baseball pitcher for Cleveland Spiders and St. Louis Perfectos/Cardinals[citation needed]

What is Albert "Cowboy" Jones known for?

Albert Edward "Cowboy" "Bronco" Jones, a Golden, Colorado native, was a professional baseball pitcher who made his mark in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1898 to 1901. Born on August 23, 1874, in Golden, Colorado, Jones was the offspring of Welsh immigrants and held the distinction of being the first major leagues player born in Colorado.

Jones started his professional career in 1896 with the Pueblo Rovers of the Colorado State League, before making his major league debut on June 24, 1898, with the Cleveland Spiders. His career stats were modest and included a win-loss record of 25-34, 147 strikeouts, and an earned run average (ERA) of 3.63.

Jones' stint with the Spiders was significant as in 1899, the team's owners transferred most of the Cleveland stars, including Jones, to the St. Louis Perfectos. Jones pitched for three seasons for the Perfectos, who were soon renamed the St. Louis Cardinals. Jones played with the Cardinals through the 1901 season.

After his major league career, Jones continued to play minor league baseball until his retirement in 1915 at age 41, settling once again in Golden, Colorado. Remarkably, he went on to serve as the Mayor of Golden, contributing to his community long after his baseball days were over.

Jones died on February 9, 1958, in Inglewood, California.
