Date of Passing Apr 20, 2015
About Beloved Garden City High School teacher and coach Jack White died at his home in Hicksville last weekend of a sudden cardiac event. Known to many as “Jake”, he served first as a social studies teacher at the high school, and then in his retirement as the historian and statistician for several teams.

Jake was a long time contributor to the Garden City News of news articles on the high school’s sports teams.

Jake came to Garden City High school as a teacher in 1962 and retired in 2000.

While a teacher he coached softball and track.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Fiersen commented, “Over the course of his nearly five-decade involvement with Garden City Public Schools, Jake White made a tremendous contribution: First, as a social studies teacher and softball and track coach, and then, after his retirement in 2000, as the high school athletic program’s statistician, historian, lifelong supporter, and fan. Jake possessed an encyclopedia-like memory when it came to high school sports that made him the de facto expert, not only for Garden City, but for all of Nassau County. Jake embodied the strong sense of connectivity that characterizes Garden City’s athletic program. His work ethic was an inspiration to all who were fortunate to cross paths with him. His broad smile and positive attitude will be sorely missed. His passing is a great loss to our school community.”

Jake is survived by his son, Kevin; daughter in law Talia; two grandsons and a granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 26th at Fairchild Sons in Garden City from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Garden City.
