What is Jack Landau known for?

Jack L. Landau, a distinguished jurist and an alumnus of Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon, was born in 1953 in Colorado. He began his judicial journey after attending Lewis & Clark College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. He would later enroll in the school's law school, Northwestern School of Law (now Lewis & Clark Law School), and graduate with a Juris Doctor in 1980. Furthering his education, Landau earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in judicial process from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2001.

Shaping his professional career, he started working as an instructor at his former law school and then as a clerk for Judge Robert C. Belloni of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. After passing the Oregon bar in 1982, he ventured into private practice at Lindsay, Hart, Neil & Weigler in Portland, and eventually became a partner. His journey then led him to join the Oregon Department of Justice, where he rose to the position of deputy attorney general.

Landau was appointed to the Oregon Court of Appeals in December 1992, serving on the court until 2010. His exceptional service led him to win re-election to six-year terms in 1994, 2000, and 2006. Additionally, he served as an adjunct professor at Willamette University College of Law, teaching legislation.

In 2011, following a successful election, Landau took office as the 100th Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, a position he held until his retirement in December 2017. His impressive and extensive career in law and justice exemplifies his dedication and significant contributions to the field.
