Service description
I'm a Viet Nam era veteran, having served from 1964 to 1967. My MOS was 22F20 which was a Nike Hercules missile electronics maintenance technician. I took my basic at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri (due to the meningitis outbreak at Ft. Ord at the time) in the dead of Winter with wind chill temperatures sometimes reaching around 30 degrees below zero!!! Following basic, I took my A.I.T. schooling at Ft. Bliss, Texas where one of the Army Air Defense Schools was located at that time. Following that, I received orders for the Southern European Task Force (S.E.T.A.F. - which was part of U.S. Army Europe) headquartered at Vicenza, Italy (in northern Italy) with the 559th artillery group and, from there, was re-stationed with the 31st Artillery Detachment, and saw duty at Bovolone (near the southern Italian Alps) and Bagnoli de Sopra (near Venice). I saw additional TDY duty at the nuclear missile school at Hawkins Barracks, Oberammergau, Germany. From there, I got to spend a good deal of leave time at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Chiemsee, and Berchtesgaden - all in Germany, and enjoyed a beautiful day outing on some of the tours at Salzburg, Austria. Even though military life is most decidedly not my cup of tea, the chance to travel and see parts of the world I might never get to otherwise was most welcome.
