About	Janet "Jan" K. Hammerstone, 59, of Lexington, Ky., passed away Wednesday evening with the grace and courage she showed throughout her life. Jan was bom to Colonel Kenneth L. Halverson and his wife Bernice Reierson Halverson on August 8, 1945 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She graduated from High School in Ft. Knox, Kentucky and went on to graduate from St. Olaf College in Minnesota with a Bachelors Degree in Norwegian and Art in 1967. She married Thomas R. Hammerstone, of New Jersey, in 1968 and they were together for 28 years until Tom passed away unexpectedly in 1996. Jan was a teacher of the 4th grade and Adult Literacy and English as a second language in various communities. Jan's teaching ministry also involved children as she was a Sunday School teacher in the various communities where she lived for over 30 years. Jan often spoke of what made her heart sing: her family, her art, her enduring friendships and her unshakeable faith - and she encouraged those around her to discover the same thing for themselves. She is survived by her children, Jill Hammerstone of Cincinnati, Todd (Mary) Hammerstone of Nicholasville, and by her two grandchildren, Thomas and Sarah. Of all her artistic endeavors, Jan often said that her children where her best creation, and her grandchildren were her most precious gift.
