1926 - 2015 Obituary Condolences

JOSEPH LEIGH of Dearborn, Michigan, joined his beloved wife Sophia in their eternal home on November 20, 2015. Born Joseph Leigh Mikeska in Detroit, on April 24, 1926 to Anna Horak and Thomas Mikeska he graduated from Fordson High School where he later returned as a beloved teacher, coach and counselor. Joseph served as an Army Infantryman in France during WWII, was declared missing in action during the Battle of the Bulge and was later rescued and honorably discharged from the Army. He returned to marry his childhood sweetheart and next door neighbor Sophia Zywot on July 24, 1946. Joseph earned his Education degree, his teaching certificate and three Master's degrees from Wayne State. He later attended the University of Michigan for a Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling. His compassion and commitment to his students was evident - to everyone who knew him. He is widely respected and admired by colleagues, students and parents in Dearborn. On his retirement from Fordson High School many students expressed their love and thanks to him for being a teacher who set them on a path to a successful life. Known to everyone who loved him as Jose` - he leaves a legacy of love of children, education and inspiration. Joseph and Sophia together raised with loving care their three children: Gregory Leigh McKae of Dearborn MI, Geoffrey Thomas McKae (Patty McKae) of Canton MI, and Leslie McKae Traylor (James Traylor) of Gainesville FL. He is also survived and loved by grandchildren: Keith (Sarah), Matthew, Daniel, Carrie, John, Ashley, Melissa (Kellan), Colin and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Sophia of 68 years and brother Thomas McKae(Virginia McKae). It is with great sadness and a tremendous sense of loss the family said goodbye to Mom (Grandma) and Dad (Grandpa). They are at peace in the loving embrace of each other. Though they will be missed, they will never be forgotten! A Celebration of Life on their 70th wedding anniversary will be held at 3426 Linden, Dearborn on July 24, 2016. The open house, starting at 2 p.m., will be hosted by their devoted family. In lieu of gifts you may donate to the National Kidney Foundation.
