The North Dakota Senate overwhelming defeated a bill Monday that would have forced North Dakota elementary schools to be affiliated with high schools in the state.
One result of the bill would have been East Fairview students not being able to attend high school in Fairview.
Senate Bill 2341 was defeated by a 38-9 margin on Monday. After a committee meeting last week, committee members voted by a 4-1 margin that the bill shouldn’t pass.
East Fairview School Principal Daryl Flagen told the Herald earlier that 38 North Dakota school districts would be affected if the bill passes.
Flagen added an agreement has been in place with Fairview High School since 1921. East Fairview School runs through the eighth grade.
If the proposal passed, East Fairview students would need to attend the high school in Alexander, N.D., or Trenton, N.D., beginning in 2013. He notes the maximum distance a student from North Dakota travels to Fairview High School now is 12 miles. If the students are required to travel to Alexander and Trenton, the smallest amount of travel would be 21 miles.
Fairview Superintendent of Schools Matt Schriver said about one third of Fairview High School’s enrollment comes from East Fairview.
