About Band Director

David R. Finkam of Noblesville, IN formerly of Kettering, OH passed away on February 17, 2018. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on March 6, 1937 to the late Franz and Elisa Nimtzig Finkam and attended the Dayton Public Schools. David received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Capital University in 1959 and a Master of Music Degree from Miami University. He taught music in Gettysburg, Pleasant Hill, Covington, and was marching band director at Fairmont West in Kettering, OH. He also directed the Kettering Civic Band. After receiving an Elementary Teaching Certificate from Wright State University, he taught 4th & 6th grade elementary classes until he retired in 1990. Many churches benefited from David's excellent musical skills as choir and handbell director for over 55 years. He was the founder of the Sinclair College Handbell Choir and was a clinician for handbell seminars at the local, state, and national level. He served on the board of American Guild of English Handbell Ringers as Area V Chair. David was a member of Christ the Savior Lutheran Church in Fishers, IN. David enjoyed his family, woodworking, the Gentlemen's Breakfast, the Retired Band Director's lunch, and weekly Bible Study. He was always thankful for the dedicated people he was blessed to direct and he had a special love for teaching young people how to play handbells.

Davis was preceded in his death by his parents and a sister, Frances Baker; He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jeanette Sander Finkam; son, Joseph (Sue) Finkam and grandson, Drew of Carmel, IN; daughter, Jennifer Eskola and granddaughter, Winter; Mother-in-law Treva Schilling Sander, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, Centerville, OH. Visitation at 10:00 a.m. Interment at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Greenville, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ the Savior Memorial Fund-Music, 10500 E. 126th St., Fishers, IN 46038 or Epiphany's Lutheran Church-Traditional Music Ministry, 6430 Far Hills Ave., Dayton, OH 45459.
