Steven L Schrader
Class of 1973
Steven L Schrader is the author of 'Silent Alarm; On The Edge With A Deaf EMT' published by Gallaudet University Press. He is a former student of ENCSD. As the country's first deaf educated firefighter and Emergency Medical Technican in Georgia, Steven Schrader spent 30 years in Atlanta and retired to enlist into the military as a medic at Fort Stewart. After nine years, Steven Schrader was medically discharged for a serious injuries sustained during a night navigation excerise. After a two year recovery and learned to walk again, Steven Schrader is currently a paid volunteer firefighter and Wildland Firefighter in Marion County, Florida. He said that after all these years, he has found his own slice of heaven at a fire station in a coummunity that has more horses than people. He is currently writing a new book on how to become a deaf firefighter and the history of deaf firefighter. In the time he was a deaf firefighter, Steven Schrader implemented many emergency programs for the deaf in Georgia, donated dozens of TTYs for 911 centers and adovated for better emergency care for the deaf.
