What is Kip Miller known for?

Kip Miller, born June 11, 1969 in Lansing, Michigan, is a celebrated former professional ice hockey player and an alumnus of Eastern High School, Lansing, Michigan. He had an impressive career in the National Hockey League (NHL) spanning 17 years from 1990 to 2007.

Miller's ice hockey prowess was evident from his college days at Michigan State University, where he registered 116 goals, 145 assists and a total of 261 points, leading the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in scoring for two consecutive seasons. His outstanding performances awarded him the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 1990, a distinct honor for the finest player in college hockey. He was the first Spartan to receive this honor.

Transitioning to the professional leagues, Miller was drafted 72nd overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. During his extensive NHL career, he played for eight teams, including the Quebec Nordiques, Minnesota North Stars, San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Washington Capitals. Importantly, Miller is the only player in New York Islanders' history to play for the team three different times.

As for his NHL statistics, Miller clocked impressive numbers across various seasons. For instance, in the 1990-1991 NHL season with Quebec Nordiques, he played 13 games, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists. The following season, he participated in 36 games for the Nordiques, contributing 5 goals and 10 assists. His other career statistics are equally impressive, demonstrating his significant contribution to the teams he played for.

Aside from his professional career, Miller's family has a rich hockey background. His cousin Ryan Miller is a well-known goaltender, and the second Spartan to win the Hobey Baker Award in 2001. Kip's other cousin, Drew Miller has played for the Detroit Red Wings. Overall, ten members of Miller's family, including his brothers Kevin and Kelly, have played college hockey for Michigan State.

Following a successful professional career, Miller retired from professional hockey in 2007. Nonetheless, his contributions and achievements in the sport continue to be a source of inspiration for many aspiring ice hockey players, notably in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan, and beyond.
