He is well recognized in the sports world as a former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1985 and 2000. He had a remarkable hockey career playing predominantly as a Left Wing.

Miller began his NHL career with the New York Rangers during the 1984–85 season. A significant move in his career occurred in the 1986–87 season, when he was traded to the Washington Capitals. The trade was a major one as it featured Bobby Carpenter, a former first-round pick, moving to the Rangers.

Following his playing career, Kelly transitioned into a coaching role. From 2001 to 2003, he served as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders. His coaching journey took him back to his roots in 2011 when he was named assistant coach of the Michigan State University hockey team, joining forces with his former teammate Tom Anastos, who was then the head coach.
