He is well recognized in the sports world as a former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1985 and 2000. He had a remarkable hockey career playing predominantly as a Left Wing.

Miller began his NHL career with the New York Rangers during the 1984–85 season. A significant move in his career occurred in the 1986–87 season, when he was traded to the Washington Capitals. The trade was a major one as it featured Bobby Carpenter, a former first-round pick, moving to the Rangers.

Following his playing career, Kelly transitioned into a coaching role. From 2001 to 2003, he served as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders.
