What is Lionel James known for?

Born on May 25, 1962, in Albany, Georgia, Lionel "Little Train" James was an American professional football player who showcased exceptional talent beyond his relatively small stature of 5 feet 6 inches and 171 pounds. His journey began at Dougherty Comprehensive High School in Albany, Georgia, where he played football, basketball, and also participated in track and field.

Despite his smaller size, James' talent drew the attention of Auburn University, the only major college to recruit him. Not only did he share the backfield with Bo Jackson, but he also led Auburn as the leading rusher in 1981. His performances in 1981 and 1982 saw him also lead the team in all-purpose yardage, and he was even the nation's lead in punt returns with a 15.8-yard average. James' noteworthy performances helped the Tigers secure the Southeast Conference championship and the 1984 Sugar Bowl, and he was honored as a captain in 1983. In recognition of his collegiate career achievements, James was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

In the 1984 NFL Draft, James was chosen by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round, marking the beginning of an illustrious professional career. His best year came during the 1985 season, where he set then-NFL records for receiving yards by a running back and all-purpose yardage. Notably, James was the first running back to have a 1,000-yard receiving season in the league. His career NFL statistics include 1,061 rushing yards with an average of 4.6, 4 rushing touchdowns, 209 receptions, 2,278 receiving yards, and 10 receiving touchdowns. His career saw him named as the NFL kickoff return yards leader in 1984 and he was also a member of the San Diego Chargers 40th Anniversary Team.

Lionel James passed away on February 25, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama, but his legacy in the NFL lives on, thanks in part to his remarkable performance with the Chargers from 1984 to 1988.
