Graduate Director and Professor. School of Architecture, University of Notre Dame. Prof. Bess began overseeing the Graduate Program in August 2004. A nationally-recognized expert on town planning and neighborhood baseball park design, Prof. Bess serves as a design consultant for municipalities, architects and community development corporations working through the Chicago-based office of Thursday Architects. Prof. Bess engages in tasks as diverse as town and neighborhood master planning, code and ordnance writing and parking and traffic analysis. In 1987 and 1988, he was the director and principal designer of the Urban Baseball Park Design Project of the Society for American Baseball Research. Prof. Bess, a former contributing editor to Inland Architect magazine, has written extensively on issues of architecture and urban design, including the books Till We Have Built Jerusalem: Architecture, Urbanism, and the Sacred; City Baseball Magic: Plain Talk and Uncommon Sense About Cities and Baseball Parks; and Inland Architecture: Subterranean Essays on Moral Order and Formal Order in Chicago. A professor of architecture and curriculum coordinator in the Division of Architecture at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan from 1994 to 2004, Prof. Bess also has been a visiting professor at the University of Michigan, Miami of Ohio and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prof. Bess received a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1981 and Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School.
