About Me | After high school, I joined the United States Air Force and then married my Cowan High School sweetheart (Brenda Grubbs, class of 1966), on May 18,1968 at the Luray Church of the Nazarene. We had our first daughter Kim on June 8, 1969 at Homestead AFB, Florida, second daughter, Michelle on November 20, 1972 at Scott AFB, Illinois, third child, a son , William on April 28, 1974 at Tyndall AFB, Florida. Unfortunately William passed away an hour & forty five minutes after birth from complications caused by an IUD birth control device. Our third daughter, Lora was born on December 31,1975 in Muncie, Indiana. I spent 8 years on active duty in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic on 1 & 2 engine jet fighter aircraft. I served an additional 14 years in the United States Air Force Active Reserve as an aircraft mechanic on KC 135 inflight refueling tankers (the military version of the Boeing 707). I flew extensively with the tankers worldwide. Between my military career & civilian life, I have visited all 50 states & at least 9 foreign countries, maybe more. There are some I am sure I have forgotten about. I officially retired honorably as a Master Sergeant from the Air Force September 2, 2002 with 21 years 8 months total service. I received multiple honors as the crew chief of the month, quarter & year. The non-commissioned officer of the month & quarter. Additional awards as the senior non-commissioned officer of the month, the quarter & the year. I was asked about & referred to serve with the USAF Thunderbirds while working on the F-4 Phantom II Fighter/Bomber aircraft, (the Thunderbirds were flying the F-4 Phantom at the time), but turned it down due to my commitment to my family which is everything to me. Going with the Thunderbirds would have involved too much time away from home traveling worldwide for months on end. It would have been an awesome experience, but family was more important to me, so I did not pursue it. I received numerous ribbons & medals to include 2 Commendation medals & a Meritorious Service Medal, 2 National Defense Medals for service in VietNam & the Persian Gulf War, VietNam Service Medal, Liberation of Kuwait Medal with a total of 17 altogether. Additionally, I am a 100% disabled veteran from health issues caused by exposure to the defoliant agent orange in VietNam. I am extremely proud of my military service! I also retired from Cowan Community School Corporation on January 1, 2011 after 24 years 6 months. I was employed as...(read more) |
