About Lyle King, 85, of Charlevoix passed away March 21, 2014, in Charlevoix.
Lyle was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Charlevoix, the son of Sam and Eva King. He graduated from Charlevoix Public Schools in 1947, where he was an excellent athlete participating in varsity basketball and football. He was selected to attend Wolverine Boys State in 1946, sponsored by the Charlevoix American Legion and Kiwanis.
Lyle enlisted in the U. S. Navy in October, 1948, serving aboard the USS Kermit Roosevelt ARG-16 during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in October 1952. He earned the Korean Service Medal two stars, United Nations Medal and Navy Occupation Medal.
After the war, Lyle attended Arizona State University at Tempe, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Technical Designing and Electrical Engineering. He went to work for the Ampex Corporation in Redlands, California, where he invented the cassette tape.
Lyle returned to Charlevoix in 1970 and worked at Freedman Artcraft Corporation as a Draftsman. He was elected to serve as the Charlevoix City Clerk. Lyle worked at Modern Engineering in Harbor Springs and was employed as Principal Engineer at Chrysler Corporation where he designed wiring for the Jeep.
Lyle was a lifetime member of the Charlevoix VFW. He was an avid golfer and was in the Ampex Annual Tournaments 1960-1969, golfing at the Buick Open, Crosby, Keiser Int. Pro-Am
Lyle is survivied by his wife, Marilyn, whom he married in 1979; his daughter Kim (Cam) Daigneault; grandson, Alex Daigneault; his sister Janet (Don) Hardy; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bette (Withers) King in 1973; his brother, Robert (Bob) King in 1998; his sister, Sally Bennett in 2007.
Burial in Barnard Cemetery, Marion Township, at a later date. The Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix in charge of arrangements.
