About The body of Private first class Robert W. Belfy, 19, who was killed in action in Germany on March 24, 1945, while serving with the 17th Airborne Division during Operation Varsity, the Airborne invasion of Germany, will arrive in Charlevoix Saturday afternoon from a temporary cemetery in Europe. Funeral services will be held at the See Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday with burial in the Brookside cemetery.
Pvt Belfy is the son of Erwin E Belfy a Michigan State Conservation Officer and the son of Lenore Allers Belfy. Born on Beaver Island on Nov. 17, 1925, he lived on there and at Garden, Mich., before coming here. He attended St. Mary's school and graduated from the Charlevoix high school where he was prominent in athletics and band circles. He enlisted immediately after graduation in June, 1944, and trained at Camp Wolters, Tex., and after transferring to an airborne division, at Fort Benning, Ga., he went overseas in Jan., 1945.
Pvt Belfy was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star and Arrowhead,WW2 Victory Medal,WW2 Honorable Service Lapel Button, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Distinguished Unit Emblem.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Belfy, Sr., two brothers, Chester, and Erwin, Jr., of Charlevoix and a sister, Mrs. Vernon LaFreniere, of Beaver Island and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Allers, of Kalamazoo.
