About Jeffery S. Drenth, 25 of Charlevoix, died June 2, 1986, at Eugene, Ore.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Winchester Funeral Home, Charlevoix. Services are tentatively scheduled Friday in Charlevoix. A definite time and place will be announced later.
Mr. Drenth was born June 30, 1961 at Bellaire, the son of Robert J. and Maxine (Black) Drenth. He moved to the Charlevoix area in 1970 and attended Charlevoix schools, graduating from Charlevoix High School in 1979.
While in high school, he was an outstanding athlete, competing cross country and track for four years. He then enrolled at Center Michigan University, where he continued as a runner while working towards a teaching degree. In his junior and senior years at CMU, Mr. Drenth won the individual Mid-American Conference cross country title. He also qualified twice for the National collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) cross country championships.
Mr. Drenth earned a backelor’s degree in biology in December 1983. He perfomrmed his student teaching at Charlevoix High School, where he served as assistant coach under his former coach, Pete Spieles.
Following his student teaching, Mr. Drenth moved from Charlevoix to Eugene, Ore., where he trained as a member of the Athletics West running team.
Mr. Drenth was a three-time qualifier for the World Cross Country Championships.
He was a member of the Community Reformed Church of Charlevoix.
Survivors include: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Drenth of Charlevoix; three brothers, Walther J. of Mt. Pleasant, Mark E. and Douglas A., both of Charlevoix; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary V. Black of Charlevoix.
The family suggest memorials to the Jeff Drenth Fund at the First State Bank of Charlevoix or the Charlevoix County State Bank.
