About ST. PETERSBURG-The last of eleven children, Peter J. McCafferty joined his parents, Francis and Nellie Donlevey) McCafferty and his brother and sisters on January 11, 2012. Peter passed away surrounded by his family in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Peter was born on Beaver Island (Saint James), Michigan on September 22, 1923. After graduating from Charlevoix High school, he served in the Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in December of 1945.

In 1946, Peter moved to Ashtabula, Ohio to be with his brother, Bernie McCafferty. While working at Ashtabula Corrugated Box Company on Ann Avenue, he met the love of his life, Lillian Luomala. They were married in 1947.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian McCafferty; four children, Cathleen (Mike) McGill of Tierra Verde, Florida, Jerry (Christy) McCafferty of Green Valley, Arizona, Joyce (Steve) Mudd of Odessa, Texas, and Bonnie (Mike) Sawruk of Ashtabula, Ohio. He has six grandchildren, Terri Poplowski, Kelly Moseley, Shanna Locy, Jessica Askew, Caitlin Mackey and Peter Mackey; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Peter was active in Democratic Politics and received an appointment from Gov. Michael DiSalle. He was assigned to Division 4 of the Highway Dept. of Ravenna Ohio, thus taking a leave from the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1958 to 1962.

One of Pete?s proudest moments was shaking hands with John and Robert Kennedy just before John Kennedy was elected President of the United States.

Peter retired from the railroad after 32 years of service as a Locomotive Engineer.

He was active at the Veterans of America, VFW Post 943. He served as Commander and headed the Memorial Day Parade for 12 years. He started the Pearl Harbor Dance and served several years as the leader.

Since 1989, Peter and Lillian have spent the winters in St. Petersburg, Florida, and lived in the Gateway Mobile Park. He became an active member of the community and headed and served on several committees. One of the committees was called the Ashtabula Gang which included his brother and wife, Bernard and Pauline McCafferty, Harold and JoAnn Tobias, and Rose and Milt DeBold.

Peter loved all of his many friends at Gateway and Ashtabula and will be missed by all who knew him, especially his family.

Graveside services will be held, Friday, June 29, 2012 at 11:00 am at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, 3140 E. Center St.(Route 20), North Kingsville, Ohio.
