About Charles L. Carey
Charles L. Carey, 78, of Charlevoix, died of kidney failure Oct. 11, 1996, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Funeral service was 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 14, at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. Lander Carter officiated. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix.
Mr. Carey was born Feb. 9. 1918, in Charlevoix, the son of Leo and Marion (Emrey) Carey. He graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1935 and then from Michigan State University in 1941. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres until he was discharged in 1946 as Lieutenant J.G. He was active in sports and played college football at MSU and also with the Great Lakes Naval Station that went undefeated during the war years playing a Big 10 schedule.
On Oct. 25, 1943, he married the former Jeanne Campbell in Charlevoix. After the war he taught at Tra- verse City High School for a short time before moving to Cheboygan in 1948 to teach and coach high school sports. He and his wife, Jeanne, also owned and operated Carey’s Boot Shop in Cheboygan. They returned to Charlevoix in 1963, where they owned and operated Carey’s Boot Shop before retiring in 1980. After retiring they wintered in Fort Pierce, Fla. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix, F.A.M. #282 in Charlevoix, past president of the Cheboygan Kiwanis Club and served as head of the housing com- mission in Cheboygan. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing and golf and spent time at a hunting cabin in Canada.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne; two sons, Pete. and his wife Betsy Carey of Neenah, Wisc., and Randy Carey of Charlevoix; grandchildren Lauren Carey of Austin, Texas, and Matt and Kate Carey of Neenah, Wisc., Jill and her husband Jeff Henshaw of Neenah, Wisc., and Sean Carey of Antioch, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Coleman of Charlevoix; four brothers, Keith and his wife Pat of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tom and his wife Esther Carey, Don and his wife Joan Carey, and Bill an his wife Judy Carey, all of Charlevoix. He was preceded in death by a son Charles “Topper” Carey and a brother Robert.
Memorial contributions may be made to Charlevoix County Junior Golf Association or Charlevoix Area Hospital. Envelopes for that purpose are available at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix where visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 13.
